What are the Problems with Shunts in Smart Meter Applications?

Writer:Microhm Page View:Date:2018-12-06
The smart meter industry is one of the most widely used industries for shunts, with different types of shunts on each smart meter. The shunt is usually installed in a smart meter with a screw hole design. It is precisely because of this design that the shunt has many problems to be solved in the meter.

The shunt usually samples the current of the smart meter circuit. The connection between the relay shunt and the terminal is based on a screw hole with a diameter of 4 to 5 mm at the splitter and the terminal block, and then the physics is performed by screws and elastic metal spacers to link. Due to the presence of perforation, the cross-sectional area of the metal conductor of the shunt decreases, the internal conductive performance is inevitably lowered, and the electric resistance becomes large.

In addition, even if the screws and gaskets used in the connection of the shunt are made of metal materials, it is difficult to ensure good electrical conductivity due to the difference in their metal materials. However, in the process of transportation of smart meters, due to road bumps and other factors, the screw contact is likely to become loose. After loosening, the gap between the shunt and the terminal becomes a bad contact. For these reasons, the resistance at the joint becomes large. These factors are some of the problems that shunts need to solve in smart meters.

In order to solve these problems of shunt connection, some smart meter engineers have adopted a new method. By using a flexible steel card to connect the shunt and using voltage detection, the problem of looseness caused by screw fixing and other performance problems can be solved, improve the reliability of smart meters. By changing the method of using the welding relay on the shunt and then fixing it on the meter with screws, this new method effectively solves the problem that the shunt is prone to looseness due to transportation problems, etc., and provides the stability and service life of the smart meter.
