Resistors Classification in Terms of Functions, Materials, Shapes and Integrations

Writer:Microhm Page View:Date:2019-05-05
Classifying the broad range of resistors facilitate the location and choice of them. We can assort resistors in terms of functions as well as materials, shapes and integration levels.

On the basis of function, resistors are divided to fixed resistors and variable resistors. Microhm mainly manufactures fixed resistors which is the most widely used type for electronics circuits to set the conditions for a circuit. The resistance values of fixed resistor are determined during the design phase and cannot be changed afterwards. Most fixed resistors use thin film and thick film technology and are of the surface mount type.

Based on the materials used for making the resistors, resistors are classified as carbon film resistors, metal film resistors, metal oxide film resistors, chip resistors, network resistors, wire-wound resistors and more.

In the light of shape, resistors are designated as leaded resistor and surface mounted resistor. The former one is composed of surface mount type and leadless type, such as MELF HPMRY Series. The later one consists of radial type and axial type.

Resistors also can be sorted as discrete type resistors and composite resistors in terms of the level of integration. Composite resistors are integrated by several resistors of the same or different resistance values in a single package. Temperature or light sensitive resistors belongs to discrete type resistors.
